From morning to night, Santa Ynez Valley celebrates nation's 250th birthday

As is 4th of July tradition, Solvang hosts downtown parade and big fireworks show at the mission

As the United States celebrated its 250th birthday this past July 4, Santa Ynez Valley residents were able to commemorate the anniversary all day.

The historic holiday celebration began at 10 a.m. with the Solvang 4th of July Parade, presented by the Solvang Rotary Club, and the 4th of July Fireworks and Celebration started after the parade at Mission Santa Ines and lasted until the big fireworks shown, which started at 9 p.m.

More than 90 entries were entered in the parade, which included patriotic floats like the Indivisible SYV group's large Constitution, which won the Sweepstakes Award, and just fun floats like the giant skateboard created by Robbie Hargreaves and Solvang Skate Shop, or the big inflatable sandwich brought in by Bread Board Deli. Add to that numerous horse groups, local dignitaries, and community groups enjoying the ride along the parade route. In keeping with the patriotic theme, the Grand Marshals this years were all local veterans: Steve Yuhas, Curtis Jahnke, Rudy Henderson, Al Salge, Steve Kester, Steve Cullen, and Dave Smith.

Allan Jones, president of Santa Ynez Valley Real Estate Company, continued his duties as parade emcee, announcing the entries from a table in front of his business on Mission Drive.

"I've been doing this since 1996, when the Rotary took over running the parade, and it never gets old," said Jones, wearing his huge red, white, and blue hat. "It's always fun and we get so much enthusiasm from people here, many from all over the world."

Of course, throughout the rest of the day, Valley residents and tourists went over to Mission Santa Ines for the 4th of July Celebration and Fireworks Show. As in past years, the event was presented by the Santa Ynez Valley Rotary Club and put on by En Fuego Events.

Attendees enjoyed the fare from over 40 food and merchant vendors on site, on the mission lawn, and live entertainment, with DJ Peete playing all day and live bands the Paradise Kings, the Agin Brothers & Territorial Law, and Nate Creager doing their sets on stage.

And the night was topped off by the big fireworks show. After the crowd was led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Jacqueline Claire Flores, a third-grader from Santa Ynez Elementary School, and the national anthem was sung by recent Cabrillo High graduate Faith Ortega, the fireworks began as Kief Adler again wowed the crowd with his pyrotechnics.
