Santa Barbara County students who are selected for this year’s flight training scholarships will be announced at the annual Airport Day on Saturday, May 18.

Winning one of the highly coveted scholarships and finishing their flight instruction can lead to careers in aviation, according to event organizer Robert “Captain Bob” Perry, who has been flying for almost 40 years.

“Learning to fly gives them the knowledge to learn how to do something they didn’t know how to do,” he said. “The scholarship gives them that start.”

The scholarships are available for all Santa Barbara County students age 14-17, and at least two will be awarded at the fifth annual Airport Day on May 18 at Santa Ynez Valley Airport.

Perry noted that a few of the scholarship students have become commercial airline pilots and some have gone into the military, with a few becoming fighter pilots.

Major Amy Moore, an Air Force reservist and graduate of Santa Ynez Valley High School, applied for a local youth aviation scholarship after hearing about it from a friend. She went on to attend the Air Force Academy from 2004-2008 and completed her Air Force pilot training in 2009.

Moore left active duty in 2014 and has been a reservist ever since, completing Air Force missions every six weeks or so. The job has taken her to about 30 different countries all over the word.

The Airport Day 2019 Flight Scholarship is funded by grants from the Santa Ynez Valley Airport Authority and the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Foundation.

Airport Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with registration for the Young Eagles youth flying event starting at 9 a.m. A free hotdog and hamburger barbecue will be served by Santa Ynez Valley Rotary Club volunteers.

Applications for the Airport Day 2020 Flight Scholarship will be available in the airport office at Santa Ynez Valley Airport or online at www.eaa491.org/scholarship. For more information, email Perry at CaptainBobsPlaneTalk@gmail.com.

When Ed Seaman’s son was a young child, the father and son loved to go out and look for tarantulas on the family’s Restoration Oaks Ranch, better known as Santa Barbara Blueberries.

“Pretty soon we invited his friends to come out and each time we got braver and eventually were able to pick one up and learned they were actually gentle,” Seaman said.

Seaman started researching the big spiders and learned so much about their habitats that he decided to open the ranch for a few days in the fall to young kids and families of all ages to come learn about tarantulas.

“Last year was our first year and I was surprised that so many people came. It was amazing to see so many people interested in these amazing creatures,” he said.

Seaman organized a free nature hike for people to learn more about these large, hairy arachnids, hosted by his nonprofit organization, Wild Farmlands Foundation.

This hike is targeted for youths from ages 8 to 17, but all ages are welcome. The goal of the hike is to find a live tarantula and then discuss the creature and its uses to the ranch. Then the spider is turned loose.

Tarantulas are commonly seen in the Santa Ynez Valley. They can range from as small as a fingernail to as large as a dinner plate when the legs are fully extended. Depending on the species, the body length of tarantulas ranges from 1 to 4 inches, with leg spans of 3–12 inches, according to LiveScience.com.

The Wild Farmlands Foundation has a mission to educate and inform everyone, especially youth, about the value of small, independently owned farms and ranches to food systems and their importance to a healthy earth.

Though this year’s tarantula hike events have sold out, early registration is available for a Spring 2019 Wild Toad Trails Hike at www.wildfarmlands.org.

Youth Empowered is a family-owned personal training business in downtown Solvang. Lynne Castellanos and her family are currently training people from 12 to 58 years old, primarily in boxing and power lifting.

“The 12-year-old is a lovely young lady who is also an accomplished dancer and a solid student,” Castellanos said as some of her students prepared for a power-lifting tournament in mid-June.

“Max, my grandson, will be lifting for the first time at our meet. He has just turned 6. We won’t let him lift heavy, of course. We are always especially conservative with the younger lifters. He has been travelling with us for meets since he was a baby and has always loved being my ‘coach’ when I am lifting. Richie, my other grandson, who is 17, will also be lifting in competition for the first time.”

Aria Riley originally came to Youth Empowered for boxing.

“I began power lifting two years ago with Youth Empowered after my boxing coach, Miss Lynn, encouraged me to take the class.”

Aria said she participated in the competition June 16 because it gave her the opportunity to lift heavy, and she enjoys the rush of competition. Her goal is “to be able to deadlift 200 pounds by high school.”

Youth Empowered also partners with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), which Lynne called “an amazing family-friendly organization.”

The AAU was founded in 1888 to create common standards in amateur sport.

“The Amateur Athletic Union focused its efforts into providing sports programs for all participants of all ages, beginning at the grass roots level. AAU served as a leader in international sport representing the U.S. in the international sports federations. The AAU also works with the Olympics to get students ready for the Olympic games,” said AAU National Chairman Martin Drake.

Logan DeLeon, 13, is a student intern for the Santa Ynez Valley Star.
