Susan Malmgren from Los Osos will be the featured artist at The C Gallery in Los Alamos. The exhibit titled “Painting and Sculpture Converge” opens Saturday, July 16 and runs through Wednesday, Sept. 14. It will showcase acrylic paintings, which have been cut up along their curves, and then sculpted into 3-D wall pieces, a literal convergence of painting and sculpture.
Malmgren, originally from the Bay area, worked in the computer industry for 40 years, and then retired into being an artist. She brought her problem solving skills with her to art classes first in Palo Alto in 1992, and then to her art studio in Los Osos years later. Raised by an artist mother, and a CPA father who liked to build things, Malmgren came to her newly invented life well prepared. She has taken art classes not only from her Palo Alto artist mentor, Barbara Clark, but also from Foothill College, UC Santa Cruz, Pacific Art League, and Palo Alto Cultural Center over the past 25 years.
She has shown her work in various group shows from Open Studios in Palo Alto and San Luis Obispo to sites around the world. Italy, Hawaii, Portugal, Ireland, Montana, Mexico, Santa Fe, Oakland and San Jose are all included in Malmgren’s showing sites.
“The C Gallery is pleased to be added to her list of venues. We’ve never shown wall sculptures that were actually paintings in our eight years of shows,” said gallery director, Connie Rohde. “There will even be hanging sculptures and pedestal pieces to round out the exhibit.”
The public is invited to the opening Artist’s Reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 16. The event is complimentary. One month after the opening there will be a chance to meet the artist and hear her talk about her work at the “Soup. Bread. Fire. ArtTalk” at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. The Soup Nite is complimentary as well.
