SYHS senior and three-sport star excels in athletics and in the classroom
The Santa Ynez Valley Elks Lodge and Santa Ynez High School recently announced its latest honoree for the Student of the Month program: Joey Duarte.
The Elks Lodge-sponsored Student of the Month program honors students who excel academically and serve their communities. The Santa Ynez Valley Elks Lodge 2640 uplifts local youth by encouraging a commitment to community service — a core value of Elks scholars.
Joey, a senior at SYHS, has called the Santa Ynez Valley home since he was 2 years old. When asked what he enjoys most about being a Pirate, he points to the people — the familiar faces, the connections, and the friendships he believes will last a lifetime. For Joey, those relationships are an important part of what makes the school and this community special. Joey was chosen by the SYHS student body for this year's Homecoming Court, which speaks volumes about his presence on campus.
When Joey talks about what motivates him, he starts with his dad. He describes his father as hardworking, determined, and someone who follows through and gets things done. Joey looks to that example in his own approach to school and life: work hard, take responsibility, and give your best effort.
In the classroom, Joey appreciates teachers who make it easy to ask questions and seek help. He named math as his favorite class, giving much of the credit to his teacher, Sandy Slobig, because she is approachable, supportive, and easy to talk to. His answer is a reminder of how much the relationships the school's teachers build with students matter.
Joey is also an active part of the Pirates' athletic community, participating in football, wrestling, and baseball, and serving as a football captain. He is involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has taken on another meaningful leadership role: coaching his 9-year-old brother’s flag football and baseball teams. Just as Joey looks up to his dad, he wants to be someone his younger brother can look up to. Coaching gives him an opportunity to share what he loves while setting an example for someone who matters deeply to him.
When asked about the values he tries to live by, Joey chose integrity. He believes in doing things as well as he can, whether the task is big or small. He also wants to bring kindness and fun to the people around him. Those everyday choices tell us a great deal about the person he is becoming.
Joey has maintained a 3.6 GPA while taking three honors classes, five Allan Hancock College classes, and one AP class. He is constantly challenging himself and will leave high school with a minimum of 10 to 20 college credits completed.
After high school, Joey hopes to continue playing baseball or football while studying business management. He is interested in construction management and the possibility of owning his own business. His long-term dream is to build his life here in the Valley, raise a family, and provide for them. His vision for the future reflects the things he values today: family, hard work, and community.
His advice to younger students is simple: “Take chances and be the best person you can be.” It is advice that speaks to his willingness to pursue opportunities while keeping his character at the center of his goals.
Joey Duarte is an exceptional student whose academic excellence, dedication, honor, leadership, and perseverance make him a deserving choice as Santa Ynez High School’s October Elks Lodge 2640 Student of the Month.
