Gabe Pendergast, 16, And Brennan Dellinger, 16, of the Santa Ynez Valley Union High School football team gathered Saturday to place flags at the graves of military servicemembers.
Memorial Day Observances begin at 10:30 a.m. in Los Alamos with a flag raising ceremony and songs of each branch of the military and speakers at the Los Alamos Cemetery at 4777 Drum Canyon Road.
At 11:30 a.m. folks will also gather for a 15-minute observance of Memorial Day with prayers and an honor guard at St. Mark’s-in-the-Valley in Los Olivos. The event is in the Churchyard Memorial Garden at St. Mark’s, next door to Mattei’s Tavern at 2901 Nojoqui Avenue at Alamo Pintado Avenue, a block from the flagpole. www.smitv.org for directions and a map.
At 12 p.m. in Solvang, a Santa Ynez Valley-wide observance will include music, a speaker and fly-over. There will be time to go to Solvang after the St. Mark’s observance ends.
Alvin Salge, commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7139 in Solvang is inviting all Santa Ynez Valley veterans, residents, visitors and their families to participate in the Memorial Day Program. The ceremony will honor all veterans, but especially those who served in World War II and the Korean War. The ceremony will include music from the Santa Ynez Valley Wind Ensemble; speeches from Lt. Gen. David Buck, 14th Air Force commander from Vandenberg Air Force Base as well as Korean War and WWII veterans, American Legion members, the Boy Scouts and a flyover of vintage military aircraft. A barbecue hosted by the Vikings of Solvang will follow the ceremony.
