The annual Solvang Fourth of July Celebration at Mission Santa Ines is always a popular focal point of the patriotic holiday — especially the big fireworks show, which organizers from the Santa Ynez Valley Rotary Club say will be even bigger.

"Preparations are going well," said Scott Evans, the club's president-elect and July 4 coordinator, by email. "The festival is very similar to previous years because people have come to expect a great family-friendly Fourth of July celebration at the Old Mission Santa Ines."

However, Evans said there's more reason for folks to come to the mission on Independence Day.

"While most of the event will be familiar to returning attendees, there are two notable additions this year: The fireworks show has been expanded and will include 5-inch aerial shells for the first time, making this year's display our largest yet.

"Also, in celebration of America's 250th anniversary, the Santa Ynez Valley Rotary Club will be giving free patriotic glow sticks, bubble wands, and red, white, and blue bracelets to children while supplies last."

Back to the fireworks: Some may be wondering, "what does having 5-inch aerial shells mean for the show?" Well, longtime pyrotechnician and Solvang resident Kief Adler, who will be doing the show's fireworks for the fifth and final time, can fill you in.

"Depending on the size of the shells, it will only go to particular height, and bursts are lower," said Adler, a retired contractor who is also the Vice Chair of the Solvang Planning Commission. "Up until this year, we've only used shells 2 to 3 inches, but when we use the 5-inch shells this year, it will go up higher, and when it ignites, it extends out even farther and takes up more of the sky. I think people will be impressed."

Adler has done the fireworks show every year since 2022, and said that preparation for the next year's show begins as soon as the current one finishes.

"I always tell sponsor they should be looking at next year’s show on the 5th of July," he said. "I start double checking things nine months in advance, then I get serious about six months before, getting a hazmat license, permits, and a contract."

Adler has been a licensed pyrotechnician for over 30 years, and his done fireworks for New Year’s celebration, at Magic Mountain in Valencia, Sea World in San Diego, and even for the Orange County Symphony.

However, Adler said this year's Fourth of July show will be his last.

"I'm 75 now, and I think it's time to hand it over to someone else," said Adler, who said he will continue to enjoy retirement with his wife while serving on the Planning Commission and volunteering for food distribution with Bethania Lutheran Church.

The fireworks show will be a capper on a big day in Solvang. The Fourth of July celebration at the mission will start at 12 p.m., after that morning's parade.

Run in tandem by the SYV Rotary Club and En Fuego Events, the celebration, like past year's will have a little something for everyone.

There will be over 40 food and merchant vendors on site, on the mission lawn, and live entertainment DJ Peete playing all day and live bands the Paradise Kings, the Agin Brothers & Territorial Law, and Nate Creager on stage.

There will also be a large Kids Zone with bounce houses, mechanical rides, and face painters (not included with your tickets. Additional purchase necessary), along with Firestone Walker and Figueroa Mountain Craft Beer, Rod and Hammers cocktails, and wine will be for sale for guests 21-plus. The Fireworks Show will begin promptly at 9 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to arrive very early to find a great spot to watch the show.

Tickets for the 4th of July Celebration are $15 general admission, with kids 12 and under free when accompanied by an adult.

Active Military and immediate family members with ID can receive up to 4 complimentary tickets. All Active Military must show IDs at the entrance. Any additional tickets will need to be purchased. To purchase tickets and get more info, go to tickets.enfuegoevents.com/e/fourth-of-july-26

Of course, as is customs, the July 4 holiday will start off with the Solvang 4th of July Parade, presented by the Solvang Rotary Club, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This year’s parade theme is “Salute to America 250” as participants and parade watchers celebrate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. The parade promises a vibrant procession featuring gleaming classic cars, majestic horse troupes, energetic dance groups, and a rousing high school marching band. And don't forget the creative floats from local businesses and organizations, showcasing the spirit and talent of the Santa Ynez Valley.

Bring your flags, lawn chairs, and festive spirit, and line the streets early for the best view of this beloved hometown tradition.

After the parade, for those who don't want to go to the mission right away, the Solvang Festival Theater is hosting its 2nd Annual Grill & Chill. The Solvang Festival Theater Garden will provide an afternoon of great music, food, and fun. The featured act is the Red Coyote Band who will play from 1 to 3 p.m. Hot dogs, beer, wine, and snacks are available for purchase

Admission is $10 at the gate (no advance tickets sold), and Music in the Garden Series Pass Holders receive complimentary admission.

Finally, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department reminds residents that all fireworks, including the so-

called “safe and sane” variety, are illegal in all unincorporated areas of Santa Barbara County and in the cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria, Buellton, and Solvang.

Safe and sane fireworks are permitted only within the city limits of Santa Maria, Guadalupe, and Lompoc — and must be used within those city limits. Fireworks

purchased in one city cannot be transported or used elsewhere in the county.

The Fire Department said, that each year, thousands of people — most often children and teens — are injured while using fireworks.
