Photographer Paul Roark to be featured at Gallery Los Olivos

Staff Report

Photographic artist and innovator Paul Roark will be the featured artist of the month with an exhibit of his stunning black-and-white images in the SYV Arts Guild Room at Gallery Los Olivos from Sept. 6 to Oct. 5.

Roark is an internationally collected artist, recognized for his contributions to advancing black and white printing technology via carbon pigments that result in the most archival photographic images.

The special exhibit in the Guild Room is coordinated with a second collection of the artist’s work, as he will also be the featured artist in the Gallery Los Olivos front room.  The displays will both showcase non-traditional black and white photography print media.

“The GLO front room will be called ‘Carbon on Canvas,’ which is my description of my process that uses inkjet printers to put my custom carbon inksets onto canvas substrates for large displays.  The Guild Room display will be called ‘Carbon on Cotton,’ which is how I describe my process of printing carbon pigments onto Arches watercolor paper,” Roark said

“While the canvas is appropriate for very large prints, the ‘Carbon on Arches’ is, in my view, simply the most archival photographic medium possible.  The carbon-carbon bond is the strongest in nature, and, as a result, the carbon pigments are the most lightfast and stable pigments we have.  Arches watercolor paper, particularly because it is uncoated, is also expected to have a far longer life than any coated or laminated photographic paper,” he added.

A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 2-4 p.m. at the gallery.

The Guild Room at Gallery Los Olivos is a space made available to member artists of the Santa Ynez Valley Art Association (formerly the Artists Guild SYV), a nonprofit arts organization with more than 30 years of history in the area.

The Guild Room at Gallery Los Olivos is at 2920 Grand Ave. For more information, visit www.gallerylosolivos.com or www.paulroark.com.

Debuting Saturday at Elverhoj Museum of History and Art is “Layers of Perception,” a new exhibition showcasing innovation in textile art and surface design techniques by 15 regional artists.

The exhibition opens with a reception from 4 – 6 p.m. on Saturday November 19. The public is invited to join in celebrating with the artists. Nibbles and wine will be served. There is no charge for admission.

The jury-selected work on display represents unique approaches to textile art, where old ways and new technologies commingle. By challenging traditionally conceived “craft” materials and redefining their context, sourced items as varied as LED lights and vintage sheet music are reinvented, showcasing the role of textiles as a visually communicative and diverse art form. The artistic use of hand-dyes, paint, photographs, stamps, and a myriad of materials embellish and enhance the work.

Exhibition programing includes five demonstration days highlighting various surface design techniques, and a holiday workshop. For more information, visit www.elveroj.org.

Selected artists are: Diana Acevedo, Linda Cassirer, Isabel Downs, Linda Estrada, Ranell Hansen, Belinda Hart, Patti Hunter, Gay McNeal, Lorna Morck, Kristin Otte, Judy Rys, Patty Six, Lou Ann Smith, Jeanne Surber, and Susan West.

Elverhoj Museum of History and Art, located at 1624 Elverhoy Way in Solvang, is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 am to 4 pm. There is no charge for admission. Suggested donation is $5.

“Layers of Perception” remains on display through February 5, 2017.

“We are honored to be partnering with the Conejo Valley Art Museum to create this unique equine exhibit,” said Adri Howe, President and Executive Director of the California Coastal Horse Rescue.  “We are excited to have the opportunity to host our annual fundraiser at such a beautiful venue, and look forward to sharing our mission with an even broader audience and raising funds for the care for our horses.”

“We are pleased to be able to promote the genre of equine art and welcome submissions from artists of all disciplines,” said Maria Dessornes, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Conejo Valley Art Museum.  “Our exhibit will provide both accomplished and emerging equine artists an excellent showcase for their work.”

The Wildling Museum of Art and Nature and the Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment (SCAPE) present Places of the Heart, a juried exhibition and sale celebrating treasured places in the tricounty area.

Guided by input from the community, members of SCAPE painted in locations through the San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties. The plein air works showcase the amazing natural features of our region and the talent of the SCAPE artists. Judge Eric Merrell of the California Art Club reviewed the 160 paintings and narrowed it down to 77. The selected works will be on view and available for purchase from October 8 through October 23. For an early look at the exhibition, purchase your ticket to the Art Party on October 7.

Along with presenting an exhibition, SCAPE will be out in Solvang demonstrating their techniques on the weekends and providing associated programming while the show is on view.

SCAPE artist Pamela Zwehl-Burke will be offering a workshop for children to create their own landscape wind chime from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on October 15. Pamela, assisted by other artists from SCAPE will give a personalized tour of the exhibition and provide the necessary materials and instruction for the wind chime activity. $5 per child, $2 for siblings and registration can be completed at the Wildling, by calling 805-686-8315 or online.

To close the exhibition SCAPE will provide a free reception and artist panel featuring Nancy Freeman and Larry Iwerks as panelists, while Tony Askew moderates at 2 p.m. on October 23.

The Wildling Museum, where art and nature meet, offers visitors a unique perspective on the importance of preserving our natural heritage. Through the eyes of artists, education and field experiences, guests can renew their relationship with the wilderness and understand its fragile nature – hopefully leaving more committed toward ensuring those spaces remain for future generations. For more information, to volunteer and/or join as a member to support this important local arts and nature institution please visit www.wildlingmuseum.org.
