A vegetation fire that started Monday afternoon charred nearly 40 acres just south of the Santa Ynez Airport, according to Santa Barbara County Fire officials.

“The fire grew to approximately 40 acres and did temporarily threaten a processing facility at Gainey Winery, however there was structure defense in place and the building was not damaged,” said Capt. Dave Zaniboni.

The fire started about 1:30 p.m. in the grass area just south of the Santa Ynez Airport. Initial reports stated the fire was about five acres and grew to just about 40 acres by 2:45 p.m. Forward progress was stopped by Santa Barbara County Fire that had a full response including two helicopters and two air tankers as well as help from Los Padres Forest Service, Zaniboni reported.

 

There were no injuries reported, cause of the fire remains under investigation.
