The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for its North County Citizens Academy, which begins on Sept. 11.

The Sheriff’s Citizens Academy was developed to educate citizens about the role of law enforcement in their community, and to give attendees a better understanding of the operations of the Sheriff’s Office.

The interactive class offers participants an opportunity to engage in hands-on learning as they take part in law-enforcement training, and hear presentations from a variety of units within the Sheriff’s Office.

Topics include a history of the Sheriff’s Office, a jail tour, Courthouse Operations, Coroner’s Bureau (Morgue), Emergency Communications Center, Firearms, Forensics Investigations, Air Support, K9, SWAT, and Hostage Negotiations.

The Citizen’s Academy is held 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays starting Sept. 11 at the Solvang Municipal Center, 1644 Oak St. The academy will continue the following six weeks at varying locations throughout the county. Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
