Usually, Fred Lageman plans all year for his epic Halloween Haunted House, but this year he had about a month and a location change and was excited for the challenge.

“With the Solvang Festival Theater under renovation and COVID restrictions we just weren’t sure until about a month ago when we got the green light,” he said. “I am enjoying the challenge of having zero budget and designing it around props we already have.”

The annual Haunted House is put on by the Solvang and Buellton Parks and Rec departments, under the direction of Lageman’s vision. With the theme of “Face Your Fears” this year, the attraction will return Oct. 29 and 30 to the back parking area of the Solvang Parks Department along with a small Halloween Street Fest.

“We decided to switch the dates this year as well, as Halloween falls on a Sunday, and it also gives our staff and volunteers to go trick or treat with their families on Halloween,” Lageman said.

For 27 years, it has been a Valley tradition to brave the approximately 20-minute guided tour through the theater building and grounds, and Lageman said he plans on making the location change just as terrifying as he can.

“The maze will take people through three sections: Old West, Clowns and Phobias (which include spiders, creepy dolls and tight spaces),” Lageman said.

A more kid-friendly version for young children will be available from 6 to 6:30 p.m. each night. A scarier version for older children and adults will run from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.

More than 2,000 people walk through the mysterious Haunted House every year, which raises around $20,000 for Parks and Rec programs.

“I really enjoy the creativity aspect of doing the set construction and seeing it come to life,” Lageman said. “I also really love entertaining the community.”

This year’s Haunted House still needs monsters (actors) and tour guides, as well as volunteers to help with the construction and dismantling of the set. Construction starts on Oct. 20 until the day of the event.

Applications are available in the Solvang Parks and Recreation office or on www.cityofsolvang.com. For more information, call 805-688-PLAY.

Tickets are available online on the city’s website and BuelltonRec.com, as well as at the door.

Staff Report

Buellton and Solvang Recreation are happy to announce the return of the 30th Annual Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturday, April 3.

“Although this year’s epic egg hunt has to be somewhat modified, we hope the changes will allow even more kids and families to enjoy the fun,” said Kyle Abello, Buellton Parks and Rec coordinator.

Recreation staff and volunteers will be hiding eggs beforehand at each of six local parks, and families will be free to hunt for eggs at their own pace all day on April 3 as supplies last. (Park hours are generally 8am to sunset). The six parks are as follows:

Solvang

Sunny Fields Park, 900 Alamo Pintado Road

Hans Christian Andersen Park, 633 Chalk Hill Drive

Alisal Commons, directly across from the River Grill entrance

Buellton

River View Park, 151 Sycamore Drive

Oak Park, 401 Sycamore Drive

Village Park, 330 Valley Vineyard Circle

Egg Hunt pamphlets will be available at each park entrance so you’ll know the areas where eggs are hidden and how to redeem your prize if you find an egg with a ticket inside.  There will be one shiny grand prize egg at each park and many smaller prize eggs.  We ask that you limit yourself to 8 eggs per child so there will be enough eggs left for all to enjoy.

Contact Buellton Rec at 688-1086 or Solvang Parks & Rec at 688-7529 for more information.

Staff Report

The City of Buellton in partnership with the Buellton Rec and the Buellton Visitors Bureau & Chamber of Commerce are gearing up for a Christmas Farmer’s Market and Poker Run, being held on the weekend of Dec. 5 and 6.

The Poker Run will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5. In this fun, family event that can be done socially distanced and at your own pace, participants drive around to the various stops in town (to be announced closer to the event).

At each stop, contestants will select a card and record it on a game sheet they will receive at check-in. After completing five stops, they will then have a complete poker hand. The final stop will be at the Chamber & Visitors Bureau office where all hands are then collected. Winners will be announced following the event and prizes will be given.

It is $20 to participate in the Poker Run and extra hands may be purchased for $5. Prizes will be given for the most spirited team as well, so dressing up for the holidays and decorating your car is encouraged.

The Buellton Christmas Farmer’s Market will take place Sunday, Dec. 6, at the Village Park from 2 to 6 p.m. with Santa & Mrs. Claus making an appearance from 3 to 5 p.m.

The Christmas Farmer’s Market will feature local farmers selling their produce, a Cal Taco food truck, arts & crafts kits for the kids to take home, a photo op with Santa and Mrs. Claus (in a socially distanced way), music by the Santa Ynez Valley Jazz Band and a beautiful light display at 6 p.m.

Children are encouraged to bring their letters for Santa Claus and drop them in his mailbox, as sitting on Santa’s lap will not be allowed this year. Guests are asked to bring their phones to take a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will be under the Gazebo from 3 to 5 p.m.
